   ye
Dreaming children, come in masses
   we
Errant artists grow like grasses
   find
Verity in our invention
   our
Interred art, our loved detention

Are we now become a force
Nature of a deferred course
To paths less chosen, grander still
Always for those who wander will?

   we are
Reborn with each ingredient
   we are
The soul of every deviant
Okay... this one has been a long time coming. Before we go any further, I'd just like to say that I would very much appreciate comments on both the drawing and the poem, if you are so inclined to give them. This poem is an acrostic - that is, if you read the first letter of each line going down, it will spell something. I wanted to do this a little different, though, hence I have three stanzas, the first and last being staggered in a way that breaks up what would be normal lines. I've been experimenting with it a bit lately. It doesn't look pretty as I had to use the code option to keep the structure intact. You will note that the acrostic spells, you guessed it, DEVIANTART. As always, the drawing was pencil to ink, 100% ballpoint everything.

Anyway...

I believe I finished this drawing last October, along with the poem, and I have not until today posted either of them. The question is - why today?

Well, these are two pieces about Deviant Art. These are about those that I've met, those I still talk to, and those I will meet in the future. These are about the community. Right now, we are suffering from a lot of political upheaval, and I wouldn't exactly call this a great time for community spirit. There's a lot of bad blood. A lot of folks are protesting by putting away their work, many are putting up angry journals, and lines are being drawn.

I'm going to post a link to the journal of a photographer I've admired here for a short while. Arachnid15 is a cool guy and an upstanding community member, and I believe he's right. We aren't here for politics, we're here for art. I feel bad about what's gone down, and I certainly have a lot of love for the people involved, but don't let it take away from what has always made this place great - you. Us. This place may have been started by a few individuals, but it was BUILT by the community. Without you guys, DA might exist, but it wouldn't be what it is.

So I'm not telling you what to think or what to do, but I'm just asking you to remember that this place is not only about the art, it's about us. I love you guys, all of you, both sides of the argument, staff and otherwise. This place means a lot to me, and I wish it, Jark, and all of you long, happy, successful lives chock-fucking-full of the meaning and definition that only come through the appreciation and creation of ART.

Thanks so much. I really need to rescan and resubmit the thing someday. It used to be with these poetry/picture combos that you could see the image in its full glory, but now its limited to a preview size. I don't even know where the original work is anymore, sadly. After moving from California to Texas, it could well be in either place! But someday I'll get it redone.

Thanks again. =)

I love the poem. It makes me proud to be a Deviant! I like the drawing too. The way many of the faces are being forcibly torn away from their group, others leaving willingly.

On the image: It's in black and white. It's trippy because there's really just one texture, but because it goes in different directions it makes the '3D' objects come together as a scene. About the lil Deviant faces, I think all their personalities speak for us collectively as Deviants: we are happy, quirky, mad, stale, stringy and . . . gloobily. . . .

On the poem: Had thou sprung from Shakespearean mode? I tend to write like this after watching one of his plays. The content of it is really provocative because it claims to be 'We the Deviants' while it takes no accountability in representing us. Awesome caricature.

And I like that it's in black and white. Is this in support of the 'people dream in black and white' idea? -chuckle- While I dream in color, little children dream of Deviants? :b

First off, let me say you rock Mikey!

I suggested this as a DD. I think its done beautifully even if it didnt get featured. As a matter of fact, thats what the art reminds me of, a DD, because of the selection going on with the robotic arms and suction pipes. I am so happy for all the attention you've been receiving, you deserve it. When I read the poem and the description I got tears in my eyes, hell, reading it again gives me tears in my eyes. Your brilliance shows this piece with such a loving, warm attitude. It was submitted in a time of absolute chaos and it was one of those things that DA needed. Everything around us was negative and everyone was upset. This piece wasn't done with the slightest bit of negativity, and its neutrality was calming and comforting. I'm really glad you chose to finally share this with us, your timing was wonderful.

Be proud. :)

The shading took ages, as it generally does with this style. I had originally debated whether or not to fill in the background mostly because I knew how long it was going to take. =) Thank you so much for the comment! =)

This artwork reminds me of a ghostbusters comic. A very nostsalgic style used to draw this image.

As for the poem, it speaks of a well thought about political statement... that I have tried with all my heart to remain a spectator of, not a player.

Well done with your successful statement.

Thank you. =) I've tried to remain a spectator as much as possible as well. I'd rather let those involved work it out themselves while we concentrate on keeping our community going strong. But thanks, I appreciate the comment and the support!

Cleverly writte. Great wording. Though I do have a critique. I want to say that it should be "Are we now to become a force" or Are we now becoming a force...Either way it seems like it is missing something that line anyways...Either way still, it is a favorite. Love the drawing as well.

Thank you much. =) I greatly appreciate the comment! Though I think that line works. It could be thought of as "Have we now become a force" only said with what I felt was a little more flair. I believe it is technically correct just the same.

And I thought I was done commenting for the night... Both are beautiful, and describe the community wonderfully. I wish more pople realized we have more power than we think. If DeviantART Inc. wants to become a corprate machine, then it needs to learn that the consumer, not the ceo or borad of directors wields all the power.

You speak the truth. While I haven't really taken "sides" on this issue, it's my sincere hope that we'll all walk away from this having learned something, both about how far we can be pushed, where we want this community to go, and why we all mean so much to each other. I have great respect for all involved, so I can only hope things heal quickly and hope (even if in vain) that some of the broken relationships will heal.

i hope it comes out all right, but i know its not gonna be short... both sides have had to get their lwyers involved and thats never "short" but i hope for the best outcome for the community. And I've only taken sides because I've read the emails between the parties involved and seen wth my own eyes how odd angelo is acting. I'm glad there are those that can stay nutral tho... every fight needs its impartial judges.

I haven't been on dA long enough to really "get" what's going on here, but judging the multiple journal entries and posts I have read, people definitely have strong opinions about it. I happen to concur with yours. Art, to me, is the antithesis of politics. One has nothing to do with the other, and never should. This is not to say that I do not respect other deviants' feelings or stances on the matter, or their right to make them known, but I think that the upheaval Jark's departure has caused is creating people to become a bit sidetracked and blind to what "community" really means. It saddens my heart to know that people are taking their art off the site in protest, when really they should be posting more ... adding new friends ... and commenting on others works in a show of what community spirit should mean.

Your art and your poem is absolutely stunning, and a concise expression of what I hope Deviant Art becomes. Everyone should see this. Many thanks to Steven for pointing me your way.

Thank you so much for the long and thoughtful comment. You've no idea how much it means to me when people take the time to do that. Thanks also for the watch. I checked out your gallery very briefly, and am eager to take another look, so I suppose I can also thank Steven for pointing you my way. =)

But thank you again, I do hope to see the turmoil die down and get DA back to what it has been for so long, and what I hope it shall continue to be. It's been a great to me and many, and I will not give it up without a fight.
